The Creativity Lab -- May/June 2021 Workshops

These small, hands-on workshops will be capped at eight participants.  Register for all here.

Applied Creativity for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion 2 - Wednesday May 19th 10-30-noon - Zoom

This workshop offers applied improv, storytelling, and drawing as tools to promote and explore diversity, equity and inclusion in the classroom, meetings, syllabus, assignments and workshops. Continued exploration of status games can be added if attendees are interested. Attendance at previous workshops is NOT required.

Dr. Nan Mullenneaux taught Writing and Gender/Cultural History at Duke and Duke Kunshan Universities from 2009 – 2020, integrating into her pedagogy approaches gathered from her professional theater career. Now a consultant with Duke’s Language, Arts and Media Project, Mullenneaux helps faculty mine the rich resources of the creative arts to reinvigorate their curriculum and weather the present teaching challenges.

Creativity Lab -- April 2021 Workshops

Applied Storytelling: Friday, April 2nd, 1:30-3:00 PM

Using oral storytelling, embodied narration, and storyboard exercises to:

  1. Model effective peer review
  2. Enhance Participation in Zoom classes
  3. Teach various aspects of academic writing
  4. Develop and revise our own research and writing projects
Play With Purpose: Tuesday, April 13, 1:30-3:00 PM

Using theater techniques to:

  1. Explore diversity and inclusion
  2. Develop a more pliable presentation persona
  3. Heighten student engagement for struggling students
  4. Deepen community and solidify team-building
  5. Teach various aspects of academic writing
Status Games: Wednesday, April 21, 1:30-3:00 PM

Status games offer another way to:

  1. Explore diversity, inclusion, and equity issues
  2. Explore cultural, social, economic, and political issues
  3. Establish effective communication in small and large groups

The Creativity Lab -- Writing, Risk, and Resilience

Date & Time: Tuesday, March 9, 2021, 2-3:30 PM

This small hands-on workshop will offer activities that invigorate every stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to workshopping. It will also explore a variety of ways to establish psychology safety, encouraging students to take risks. If time allows, we will play with activities that use the white board, break out rooms, and collaboration. The workshop is capped at 6 participants

Applying Creative Activities to Your Syllabus/Course Content

Date & Time: (Various - you may register for one of three dates) Thursday, Feb. 11, 10:30-12:00 PM, Wednesday, Feb 17: 1-2:30 PM, Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2-3:30 PM

Length – 1.5 hours - Please join the Zoom in a timely manner. Due to the interactive aspect of the activities, the Zoom room will be closed 15 minutes after the start of the workshop.

Motivation, Energy and Presence

Date & Time: Thursday, January 14 (12-2pm)

Length – 2 hours - Please join the Zoom in a timely manner. Due to the interactive aspect of the activities the Zoom room will be closed at 12:15pm.

The Motivation, Energy and Presence interactive workshop offers practical, creative tools for increasing energy and responsiveness in your classroom and among your students, whether on zoom, masked or distanced. Using simple improv activities, creative writing and drawing, participants will explore ways to increase enthusiasm, motivation and focus within themselves and their students. Jump start the semester by capturing students’ attention, igniting their energy and presence from their first day back straight through the end of term.

Come refocus and reenergize for the new semester!

  • Participants will investigate how their own purpose and presence motivates their students’ energy and engagement in the (virtual or real) room.
  • Participants will explore instructional approaches in four key areas of Attentiveness, Connection, Expression and Self Awareness to imaginatively engage and deepen students’ motivation and learning.
  • Participants will discuss practical application for direct transfer of ideas from this workshop back into their classrooms.

Victor Barbella synthesizes over 20 years of learning and development experience with his creative arts background into his work as a performance and executive coach, speaker and consultant. He works with a wide array of educators, business leaders and individual contributors across the globe, helping to improve their efficacy and impact as communicators, storytellers and emotionally intelligent-centered leaders.
