Liliana Paredes is Professor of the Practice in the department of Romance Studies at Duke University. She directs the Spanish Language Program and the Intensive Spanish Summer Institute. In the field of second language acquisition Paredes studies acquisition of vocabulary, second language assessment;  experiential and community based learning. She has published GENTE NIVEL INTERMEDIO (2013) (together with Joan Munne) and edited a volume on innovation in pedagogies of second language acquisition. Currently Paredes is working incollaboration with Myrna Iglesias and Magadela Mejía (Universidad de las Americas, México) on the effect of collaborative learning across borders and linking communities of practice through virtual guided conversationamong peers. They have presented results of their project in conferences in México as well as in the USA. Paredes (in collaboration with Munne) was part of the project: Framing Identities in Motion funded by a Writ Large grant. This project focused on enhancing the learning experience of heritage speakers through the implementation of virtual conversations with heritage students from 3 different college institutions, including Mexico.

As a sociolinguist, Paredes teaches and studies issues of linguistic rights in the Americas. She has been part of the DukeImmerse cluster Rights in the Americas for three consecutive years and she has taken students to México twice. As a sociolinguist, Paredes is interested in issues of language migration, languages in contact; and linguicism. As a Bacca Fellow, Paredes will work with Nicolás Sánchez and ten students from the DukeImmerse cluster Rights in the Americas on the expansion and enhancement of a website focused on issues of Linguistic Rights. This website will serve as an interactive platform for the dissemination of knowledge about and on indigenous languages and the people who speak them.
